As I was reading the book I noticed this quote which was said in the middle of his almost drowning scene "What splendid effort!—what magnificent, what superhuman strength!" (Chapter 3, page 14). My question is, how did he have this sudden strength when he was almost dead? And if he truly had this strength why did he decide to use it even while he wanted to die? One last question, as Fahrquhar emerged from the water he saw everything clearly; do think that if it had actually happened in real life that Fahrquhar would see the same thing? (The real thing I'm trying to ask is if you think it could possibly be realistic.)

I believe that people want to save themselves or at least try to in situations like what Peyton was in. He imagined himself to be strong because he didn’t actually have strength left. I don’t see how you can compare his fake reality to real life. So no to the second question.
ReplyDeleteIn the book Fahrquhar had grey eyes which was talked about later as being the keenest of eyes. I was also thinking that if you are close to a near death experience would you start to absorb everything to the finest detail. Because your mind might be thinking this is the last you will ever see of the trees and other objects. But I would have to agree with you Summer that its probably not likely it could happen in real life.
DeleteHonestly, that's a really good question Alyssa. I wonder why he wouldn't have wanted to just die, since he was so near death, and feeling so much pain and agony. Perhaps his mind could only process the beauty around him using his vision or the thoughts of familiar people and things were all that entered his mind. This might be why he wouldn't want to go somewhere else he didn't know of . I feel like if Farquhar had actually escaped and emerged from the water, that realistically everything would appear foggy and blurred, as he has just escaped near death. He would most likely feel dizzy from lack of oxygen from the noose that was around his neck and from diving into the water and holding his breath.
